Why "Mini's"

Our "mini" Herefords first and foremost are registered with the American Hereford Association.  Their pedigrees trace back over 100 years.  They just happen to be the slightly smaller version, that's all.  This is due to carefully controlled breeding in past years of certain pedigree lines to maintain the compact, smaller-framed, yet very efficient beef animal.  They are often described as being thick, deep bodied, short legged, muscular and chunky.

Just like their larger counterparts of today, these mini's too are hardy, adaptable, easy keepers, with traditionally gentle dispositions. (Consistently reliable qualities of purebred Herefords everywhere!)  However, because of their smaller size (ours are generally a Frame Score 0) and efficiency the mini's require less water, feed and pasture per head; a real extra blessing especially in times of drought, as many of us have discovered and can attest to in these past few years!  Did we mention usually lighter working equipment.....sometimes none at all.....smaller doses of medications, etc...it all adds up!  You also can generally maintain two of these versus one larger-sized animal, therefore have the added benefit then of two calves per year instead of just one.

There is also a growing demand in today's marketplace for smaller portions of prime meat, and these "minis" provide that solution perfectly.  With their smaller carcass size, they are the ideal "one family sized meal ticket", while also being processed at an earlier age than most others.
